The story for vh vertical packaging

Mathieu started in the packaging machine business at the age of 24 and founded Hanma VOF after 30 years of experience. In 1994 Mathieu and Marcel, owner of Vepro, crossed paths. Marcel was looking for a shrink machine and found Mathieu an old Aquarius. That transaction led to a click between the two entrepreneurs and formed the basis for a long-term cooperation. Together they built VH Vertical Packaging, a successful partnership that grew out of shared passion and innovation, and has continued to grow ever since.

The Origin of VH Verpakkingsmachines

In 1998, VH Verpakkingsmachines was founded, driven by ambition and entrepreneurial spirit. Marcel and Mathieu specialized in refurbishing used packaging machines, a rapidly growing niche market. From Weert, they steadily built a company that embraced the opportunities of automation and the emerging digital era.

Partnership with Velteko

At the Fachpack exhibition in Nuremberg, Marcel and Mathieu met the Czech machine builder Velteko. This meeting developed into a strategic partnership, enabling VH to offer new, high-quality machines alongside refurbished ones. This strengthened our market position and supported further professionalization.

Further professionalization

In 2003, we took an important step in the further professionalization of our company. We optimized our accounting with reliable systems that ensured accuracy and provided better financial insight. At the same time, we strengthened our administrative office, enabling the organization to operate more efficiently and in a more structured way. This laid a solid foundation for sustainable growth and continued development.

Further professionalization

The Birth of Centurion

In 2004, we decided to develop our own vertical packaging machine: the Centurion. Together with a technical partner, we built a prototype followed by nine additional machines. The design focused on minimizing the film path and maintaining constant film tension, a feature that remains to this day. With the support of Roger Weekers, the software was quickly developed. Although market acceptance took time and competing with established players was challenging, the Centurion gradually secured its place in the market.

Identity Shift and First Centurions

In 2006, we delivered the first Centurion machines, a major milestone. At the same time, we realized our image needed to evolve. Despite selling new machines, we were still seen as a used machinery trader, which had been a key source of revenue for many years. Mathieu excelled in used machines, while Marcel focused on the new machines and structuring the company. Their complementary strengths helped the company grow step by step into a more professional organization.

Exploring the American and Chinese Market

In 2007, we visited potential suppliers and partners in Shanghai to explore international growth opportunities and build new collaborations. A year later, in 2008, we attended Pack Expo in Chicago to better understand the American market. These experiences provided valuable insights into global market dynamics and laid an important foundation for our international ambitions.

VH Transforms

In 2015, VH left behind the image of a used machinery trader and chose a renewed, more professional direction. With the move to the facility at Marconilaan 15 and a clear multi-year plan, the focus shifted fully toward growth and professionalization.

That same year, Mathieu stepped down and a new generation entered the company. Freek Jacobs joined VH with the ambition to further develop the company and prepare it for the future. With his entrepreneurial experience, strong personality, and passion for machine building, he gradually grew into his role. Under his leadership, the focus sharpened on in-house product development and the further professionalization of trading and refurbishment activities. This period marked an important transition into a new phase for VH.

VH Vertical Packaging

In 2017, VH Verpakkingsmachines changed its name to VH Vertical Packaging. The new international name reflects our focus on vertical packaging solutions and our global ambitions.

Conquering the Eastern Market

In 2019, VH took a significant step toward Asia by participating in ProPak China in Shanghai. This increased our international visibility and opened new growth opportunities. Due to the end of the partnership with Paxiom and the outbreak of Covid-19, the Asian market temporarily received less focus. Today, our machines operate in several Asian countries, and we continue expanding with new partners in India, the Philippines, New Zealand, and Australia.

Strong Growth in Centurion Market Share

In 2021, VH achieved significant growth in the market share of the Centurion vertical packaging machine. The increasing demand confirmed the strong acceptance of this innovative solution. While some key players focus mainly on building good machines, VH differentiates itself by combining a high-quality product with personal service and strong after-sales support — the key to sustainable success.

New Generation at VH

In 2022, an important decision was made for the future of VH. Freek Jacobs would not take over the leadership alone, but together with Tim Offermans (Operations) and Joeri Leeters (Engineering & Software). An agreement was made for them to become owners and shareholders within ten years. Marcel remains closely involved, focusing on strengthening VH’s international presence. The new generation is given the space to grow and take responsibility, creating strong team synergy and a future-proof organization.
