Danish Crown wanted to switch from trays to pouches, but bacon is a difficult product to package reliably. Crumbly pieces getting into the seal edge created a risk of packages failing to seal properly.
Solution
VH looked beyond just the machine and optimised the coordination between the entire line: product feed, multihead weigher, drop times and packaging machine.

From trays to pouches
“The market is changing,” explains Xander, project manager at Danish Crown. “The recent transition from trays to pouches is a good example of this.” With this shift, the collaboration with VH Vertical Packaging was further intensified. “We now have an increasing number of VH machines (both Velteko and Centurion) in our factory.”
A specific technical challenge
One of the challenges lies in the product itself. “We work with bacon. It’s a crumbly product. What you see is that bits sometimes end up in the seal edge. Then you don’t get a proper seal,” explains Xander. Johan, who is responsible for all technical matters at Danish Crown, adds, “A packaging machine is a packaging machine, but VH takes a very targeted approach to solving these kinds of specific issues. Think of filling times, integration with the multihead weigher, how the product enters the bag, and so on.”
